Sarah's Babies

My 5 year old daughter, Sarah, is quite an artist also.  She stays up late every night after we put her to bed drawing in her bed.  One of the things she draws the most is pictures of girls.  I was inspired by these drawings to try to make them into three dimensional dolls.  The result of this experiment are Sarah's Babies.  (Does this make me a Grandma???)

I took the drawing and traced the basic shapes of the different parts of the figure onto tracing paper.  Then I cut each piece from plain muslin and put them together.  Once the entire doll was sewn together I primed it with gesso and painted the details with acrylic paint.  The face is drawn on with Berol Prismacolor pencils to give her the look of a crayon drawing. Her hair is made from a peice that was machine quilted then painted and sewn to her head.  Her earrings are braided embroidery floss and pony beads.  I wanted this doll to retain the simple child-like characteristics of the original drawing.

I think this doll and drawing will be a cherished keepsake for me and Sarah as she grows up.  I hope to make more dolls from her many drawings as well.  These dolls aren't for sale but if you are interested in having one of your child's drawings converted into a doll email me and I can see what I can do.
